Victorian Sub-Aqua Group - VSAG

Based in Melbourne, VSAG is an independent, non-profit club that dives all year round (weather permitting). We have dive trips on every long weekend, plus arrange regular interstate and overseas diving trips. Diving is from the privately owned boats of our club members which means we have the freedom to dive when and where we want.

Anyone with a recognised scuba diving qualification, who can meet VSAG's entrance requirements, is welcome to join the club.

VSAG meets at 8:00 pm on the third Thursday of every month at The Maori Chief Hotel, 117 Moray Street (corner of Moray and York Streets), South Melbourne VIC 3205 (Melway 1D L11). Guest speakers, film and slide presentations are a feature of these meetings. Visitors are always welcome. Regular social functions provide an opportunity for VSAG members, friends and families to socialise.

Independent, non-profit

Boat Description:

Most diving is conducted from the privately owned boats of our members. We typically head out from the Sorrento and/or Queenscliff boat ramps in Port Phillip Bay, but occasionally from Flinders (Westernport Bay) or Newport (Phillip Island). Participants are expected to contribute to the cost of the boat's fuel bill. We generally go out for the entire day taking 2 cylinders each and lunch. Diving is unhurried and we usually manage to find a quiet sunny spot to have lunch.

Sites Visited:

Victoria offers a diverse range of diving with something for everyone. We get to fully explore the full range of local dive sites including: wrecks in the Ship's Graveyard; Lonsdale and Nepean Walls in Port Phillip Bay; the many temperate water reefs of the Mornington Peninsula back beaches and the West Coast from Point Lonsdale to Torquay; drift sites in Port Phillip Bay etc. There are also annual club trips to Wilson Promontory.

The Bends The Bends
Ask any scuba diver what is the one thing they fear most when diving and they will tell you it is the bends. However, if you get a group of divers together they will no doubt joke that '... we will probably all end up bent sooner or later!'. I myself often joked to friends and family that 'I'll probably just end up bent ...' and like most divers I used to think that it would never happen to me ... but it did. I got bent.

We bounce across the sea in the new morning, looking back to where suburban Melbourne unfolds the Sunday morning paper and reaches for another croissant. We’re heading for history in the shape of a sunken ship, and I’m heading for a meeting with my father ...
