Papua Diving

Papua Diving and its DIVE RESORTS, is located on remote Kri Island, 75 km north of Sorong, Raja Ampat, Papua - E. Indonesia. Luxurious "Sorido Bay Resort" and Eco friendly "Kri Eco Resort" cater to the adventurous Diver. "Sorido Bay Resort" ...built by divers - for divers! We offer currently 7 bungalows in 2 different styles and sizes at the Sorido Bay Resort, which are very luxurious ( incl. Aircon, Minibar, SAT TV, minisafe. separate toilet & Shower and a huge rinsing table for cleaning camera equipment)

Only opened in November 2004, Sorido allows our guests to experience Western style comforts in a traditional Papuan setting. Located at a beautiful deep lagoon on white sandy beaches, the dive resorts are central to the most pristine divesites of Raja Ampat.

"Kri Eco Resort" - escape to a peaceful Paradise!

Sitting on the edge of mountainous Kri Island, the dive resort is shaded by palm trees, that run along a long fine white sand beach. Wild birds awaken our guests each morning at sunrise ! Kri Eco Resort is simple, informal, but a very comfortable dive resort in very pristine nature. Many of our guests like it for its peaceful location, natural surroundings and tropical island beauty.

A jetty built over the large shallow lagoon in front of the Eco Resort leads to some of the guest houses. As a bonus, since the accommodations are over the water, we often see sharks, rays and schools of fish in our "garden".

DIVING: Both resorts are located in N. RAJA AMPAT. In the midst of gigantic reef systems we find more dive sites than you could map in a lifetime! From the resorts, virtually hundreds of sites with diverse topology and life can be reached with relatively short boat rides - from murky shallow bays with shrimp gobies, octopus, nudibranchs and "twilight zone" critter (pigmy seahorses); to lagoon channels overhung by rainforest; to rock islands undercut by the sea and covered with a kaleidoscope of tunicates and corals; to offshore reefs with raging currents supporting an unbelievable variety of colorful soft and hard corals and FISH, lots and lots of large fish - as many, many Mantas! Manta Rays are present almost permanently at three locations close to our resorts and it is normal to see 10 to 15 Manta Rays during one dive. The diversity of sites seems endless!! ..and we can show you the EPAULETTE SHARK - the walking shark!

The best facts remains, that our house reef is "Cape Kri" ,where Dr. Gerry Allen set his record for 283 fish species on a single dive in 2001. Several of our other TOP dive sites are just literally minutes away (as Mike’s Point , Chicken & Sardines Reef) NITROX diving is available.

Alternative activities:

Activities include hiking, kayaking, snorkeling or a visiting the illustrious "Red bird of Paradise" on an adjacent island. Bird Watchers can see Eclectis Parrots, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Great Billed Parrots, Hornbills, Brush Turkeys, Lorikeets, Cassowaries, Kingfishers and many more . At both of the resort s, beautiful wild orchids can be found, as well as monitor lizards, brightly colored coconut crabs, flying foxes and a small tree dwelling marsupial called the “Cus-Cus”.

Facilities:

SORIDO: We have worked on finding a balance between traditional and modern, while always having in mind to create the ideal dive resort. The resort has now 7 luxury bungalows. The main building hosts the reception lobby, our reservation office, the kitchen & storerooms, a huge library, a WIFI Internet lounge, a small local Papuan Art Souvenir shop and upstairs is the spacious Restaurant with splendid views over the bay!

KRI ECO: Kri Eco Resort currently has 6 over-water stilts bungalows. Most of the buildings contain two rooms and at least one sitting area.Six Western-style flush toilets are strategically located on the island near the Bungalows! The Kitchen, Restaurant and Dining area are built over-water, which always offers a nice, fresh breeze.

Papua Diving has added an(RO) OSMOSIS water filtering system to supply 10,000 L of fresh water a day to both resorts.

Sites Visited:

Papua is frontier diving. One of the last truly wild places on earth, it has yet to succumb to the pressures of overfishing, coral bleaching, exploding tourism and overpopulation. The diving reflects this. Topside there are few roads, even few boats ply the water in the Raja Ampat islands on the "bird's head", the far northwestern end of Papua, where Papua Diving is located. Underwater, the life is wild, extraordinarily plentiful and for the most part, unexplored.

Papua Diving is the most knowledgeable, with Max Ammer's many years of exploration and experiences with the indigenous Papua people. Both resorts are located in the midst of gigantic reef systems with more dive sites than you could map in a lifetime! From the resort, virtually hundreds of sites with diverse topology and life can be reached with relatively short boat rides. From mucky shallow bays with shrimp gobies, octopus, nudibranchs and "twilight zone" critters; to lagoon channels overhung by rainforest; to rock islands undercut by the sea and covered with a kaleidoscope of tunicates and corals; to offshore reefs with raging currents supporting an unbelievable variety of colorful soft and hard corals and FISH, lots and lots of large fish, the diversity of sites seems endless.

It is with great pride that we announce the first official sanctions in our No Take Zone. Last week our Rangers encountered two fishing boats laying gill nets about 30 minutes north of the resort. The illegal fishermen were intercepted on a routine patrol of our 1220 sq km No-Take Zone.
