The reef ends in a sandy bottom beyond about 20m and has a flat reef top about 3-5m. The site is rich in many varieties of coral - Staghorn, Plate Agropora, Brain, Star, Elephant Ear, Leather and a good variety of soft corals and anemones. The fish population is diverse, including lots of Sweet Lips, Groupers and Snappers, many Damselfish and Basslets, a good number of Angelfishes of different varieties, Parrotfish, and Butterfly fish. BioRock Reef
Location:East Gili Trawangan
Access:Boat or shore dive, travel time 8min
Conditions:Mild to moderate currents for a drift dive
Average depth: 14m
Maximum depth: 22m
Average visibility: 15m
BioRock Technology was brought to the island 7 years ago and the BioRock Reef is now home to several of the islands reef re-growth structures. Electric currents attract coral spawn and limestone particles to steel structures in various sizes and shapes along the 6-12m slope. Juvenile corals are thriving in these artificial environments and smaller reef fish take refuge in the shelter of these structures. Filefish, Boxfish, Cowfish, Bannerfish and Moorish Idols are common along with Frogfish, Pipefish and the occasional Crocodile fish. Much research is undertaken along these reefs and often divers are able to watch as measurements and statistics are taken.
Goodheart Reef Location:Northeast Gili Trawangan Access:Boat or shore dive, travel time 6min Conditions:Mild currents and easy drift dives Average depth:12m Maximum depth:20m Average visibility:20m Goodheart Reef begins in Shallow Turbo and runs parallel to the East Coast of Trawangan. Gently sloping from the shore into deeper water, coral bommies and outcrops protrude from sandy areas, each thriving with smaller species and juveniles seeking the shelter of shallow shore waters. Damsels, Butterflyfish, Anthias and Angels in great numbers can be found along with Cuttlefish and Octopus. Small cracks form homes to many Shrimp and Lobsters and during night dives Spanish Dancers, Crabs and Eels move along the slope hunting. This is a gentle drift for any level diver and great for macro photography.
Deep Turbo
Location:North of Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan
Access: Boat dive, travel time 5min
Conditions:Varies from none to moderately strong currents
Average depth: 24m
Maximum depth: 32m
Average visibility: 15-20m
This is a huge dive site available to divers with Advanced Open Water onwards. An abundance of large coral bommies, or hills covered in soft and hard corals, Deep Turbo will interest divers as exploring the reef and its marine life makes for a fascinating dive. The majority of the dive is around 20-30 meters, with the opportunity to multi-level the dive at the top of the bommies. Sharks, Barracuda, Tuna, Triggerfish, Snapper, Stingrays, and beautiful corals can be expected on Turbo reef. A multitude of smaller wonders can be found along Deep Turbo with many species of Nudibranchs., Pigmy Seahorses, fields of Garden Eels and Pipefish seen regularly here.
Meno Wall Location:West Gili Meno Access:Boat dive, travel time 10min Conditions: Moderate to fairly strong currents in the channel between Meno and Trawangan make this ideal for drift diving. Enter in at shallows, swim out over the slope and drop down for a great drift along the wall. Average depth: 14m Maximum depth:22m Average visibility: 15 - 20m This is a steeply sloping reef with a near-vertical top section. The reef drops to a sandy bottom at about 22m, and follows the contours of Gili Meno's shore. There is a great deal of older, dead coral over which many soft corals have formed, and algae growing through the gaps keep turtles in buffet style dining. There are many smaller heads of stony corals, including Cabbage, Brain, Star, Antler and Agropora, as well as lots of anemones. Groupers and Sweet Lips are both present in quantity, some very large. Also common are Snappers, Angelfish, Butterfly Fish, and Spotted Rock Cod, Clownfish and large Parrotfish. This is an amazing night dive with lots of Spanish Dancers, hunting Eels and Lionfish.
Bounty Wreck
Location:West Gili Meno
Access:Boat dive, travel time 12 min
Conditions:Often no current ranging to medium drifts
Average depth: 12m
Maximum depth: 20m
Average visibility:15m
The Bounty Pier fell into shallow water along the coast of Gili Meno and is now a breeding ground for juvenile corals, Angelfish, Pipefish and Frogfish. The steel wreck lies at an angle allowing large Grouper and Sweetlips to congregate in the semi darkness underneath. Bannerfish and Jacks hover above the structure and Lionfish drift off the side. This is a wonderful introduction to non-penetration wreck diving and is accessible to any level diver.
Gili Air Wall Location:Northwest Gili Air Access:Boat dive, travel time 15min Conditions:Drift dive with moderate currents Average depth: 20m Maximum depth: 28m Average visibility:20m The coral growth at this sloping wall is at its best in the shallower sections of the reef near the south end of the site, where there are some good heads of Brain and Star corals and some Agropora formations. There are lots of overhangs and arches along the wall filled with Glassfish, Moray Eels and sometimes Octopus. The deeper sections have a lot of ribbon algae and there is some nice soft coral growth in this region. Several species of reef fish are noteworthy, including the stunning Six-banded and Regal Angelfish, Lionfish, various types of Triggerfish, Sweet Lips, Damselfish and Basslets.
Simon's Reef Location:500m North of Gili Air Access:Boat dive, travel time 10min Conditions:Very strong currents at some phases of the moon make this a dive to treat with respect. Less experienced divers should consult with us to find out if this dive is within their capabilities. Average depth: 25m Maximum depth:40m Average visibility: 20m An excellent coral site made up of a variety of distinct heads and mini seamounts rising from a sandy bottom at a depth of 35m. There are eight major heads arranged roughly in a figure eight; all are well formed and abundant in coral varieties. The heads themselves are quite sculpted, with recesses and overhangs. The channels between the heads and outcrops are particular impressive, funnelling the current and concentrating large number of bigger reef fish into smaller areas. The coral variety is superb, with most types of stony coral well represented, plus a good deal of soft coral growth. Agropora (both Staghorn and Table), Star and Brain corals, Plate coral, Gorgonian Fans and Anemones are just a few of the many species on show, all in excellent condition. Fish life, particularly in times of strong currents, is biased towards the larger reef species and schooling species. Snappers and Sweet Lips are prolific in big schools tight in the coral heads; bigger Parrotfish, Angelfish, and Triggerfish are present, if slightly less prevalent; Trevally and small to medium Tuna are quite common. This site is well populated with turtles and there are often impressively large Great and Barred Barracuda.
Takat Malang Location:North of Gili Air Access:Boat dive, travel time 15min Conditions:As with Simon's reef, this site can be adversely affected by strong currents at some phases of the moon. Average depth: 20m Maximum depth:40m Average visibility: 20m This site is close to Simon’s reef, and quite similar in many respects. A collection of large coral heads (Takats) arranged in a sloping bed, beginning with a plateau at 15 metres. There are about 10 major heads, each sculpted with overhangs, outcrops and swim throughs. The heads show the same excellent diversity of corals as at Simon’s reef, covered in soft coral varieties growing on top of the stony coral outcrops, including some very big Gorgonian sea fans. The channels between the heads are as interesting as the heads themselves, with good concentrations of bigger reef fish and fascinating topography, snaking between the ornately sculpted Takats. The wonderful range of fish and coral species here are similar to those at Simon’s Reef. This is a truly excellent dive, with all the positive factors of Simon’s Reef and the added bonus of multi-level possibilities.
