Pineapple fish- light organ

Also known as the knight fish, (Cleidopus gloriamaris) is an attractive temperate water species. It can effectively live in aquaria for many years.

The light organ under each jaw has bioluminescent bacteria which glow in the dark, attracting small prey to the fish and the fish snaps them up.

Good infra red footage of pineapple fish feeding is available on Beneath Southern Seas (DVD) or Beneath the blue (VHS) by the same cinematographer George Evatt. The ffotage is quite remarkable and shows how these fish find their food.
