Ice Island - 2002

The EXPLORER'S CLUB awarded Ice Island BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM of 2002

In spring of 2000, the largest moving object ever seen on our planet began its alarming voyage. Dubbed ?Godzilla? by scientists, this immense piece of ice had enough fresh water to supply the United States with all of its water needs for years to come. So grand in scale, it was able to change the earth?s rotation as it moved.

A special team from the National Geographic Society and the New England Aquarium were the first to embark on a scientific expedition to unlock the secrets of Godzilla. Armed with the latest scientific equipment and high definition cameras they set about implementing a bold new technological approach toward exploring above, below and within the ice. For the first time, explorers will physically dive inside icebergs, taking them beyond the boundaries of mankind?s experience in an attempt to explore a new undiscovered world. Confronted by life and death decisions at each turn, the team navigate the treacherous and unpredictable pack ice - well beyond the range of rescue - to pioneer a new spirit of discovery.

Ice Island is more than a natural history experience; it?s a race to document the impact of global warming. Underwater cameras captured never-before-seen environments and creatures, intertwined with dramatic visuals, dynamic sounds and human drama on a grand scale.
