Diving in Komodo is really something that requires some special attention now. The fish life is so abundant that on one particular dive 2 weeks ago at castle rock, it got dark underwater as if a cloud covered the sun, and the divers looked up to see a school of more than 50 giant and blue fin trevallies swirl over their heads. Besides that the “common” thousands of surgeon and unicorn fish, large schools of barracuda’s and rainbow runners.
Also at Castle rock more grey reef sharks than ever, an aggregation of Malabar groupers at crystal bommie (don’t tell the live reef fish traders!) AND, a 4 m Greater hammerhead at GPS point! On that same cruise, looking out for whales and dolphins from the tenders, the group came upon false killer whales and a dwarf sperm whale at Sangean vulcano. And this was all in just one cruise.
Raja Ampat is spectacular for its diving and snorkeling. Kayaking is sensational in the shallow bays and especially in the mangrove forests. A slow afternoon cruise with one of the tenders gets you up-close-and-personal with the overwhelming land scenery and often allows for spotting of the illusive Bird of Paradise from the water. Hiking into the forest is also memorable, it is often so dense that you can almost hear the diversity of birds and animals rather then seeing them. But we have a number of contacts with the local people who can guide you on your search for mysterious birds and plants. Fishing includes everything you can think possible, un-explored fly-fishing for Bone Fish or deep water trolling for Marlin and Sailfish (>200 m). Diving includes encounters with thousands of surgeon fish and lareg schools of barracuda's encounters with the enormous Queensland Giant grouper leaves you stunned that such a large fish can move so gracefully.
