Australian Divemaster Academy

The SSI-certified program, conducted at Byron Bay Dive Centre, is designed to allow participants to progress from little or no diving experience to Divemaster certification in only ten weeks. Graduates can then go on to work in the dive industry at resorts, on dive boats and in dive shops, or continue their dive education towards Instructor certification.

The ADA offers participants a structured yet flexible program where they can learn new skills while exploring idyllic Byron Bay. Small class sizes, highly qualified instructors, and first-class facilities converge to create an unparalleled learning environment for future divemasters. The participants learn both in the temperate open water around Byron Bay and at the facilities provided by Byron Bay Dive Centre, which include an on-site training pool, classrooms, a bunk house, and fully-stocked retail shop.

"I finished my Divemaster course at with the ADA at Byron Bay Dive Centre a few months ago and highly recommend it. Byron Bay is one of the best places to stay on the Australian coast for diving, beaches, surf and lifestyle and the divemaster course is amazing!" says Dani King, a recent program participant from England. "Everyone at the Dive Centre is relaxed, professional and a lot of fun. I stayed in the accommodation upstairs which was comfortable and convenient. After the course, I ended up working as a Divemaster on the live-aboard Spirit of Freedom in Cairns, a placement which the ADA facilitated."

Perry Bartholomew, director of the ADA, says, "We are looking forward to another great season in 2007; we are proud to offer course participants the best preparation they can receive to thrive in the dive industry. The quality of the program, along with our location in sunny Byron Bay, really sets it apart in the industry. We believe it is the best value Divemaster program available in Australia.

Courses begin every two months. Participants receive the following standard certifications: Open Water Diver, Advanced Diver, Rescue Diver, First Aid & O2 Provider, and Divemaster. In addition, the program also includes small vessel handling, scuba equiptment service technician, field neurological examination certifications and courses such as compressor use and servicing. These courses are paramount for water safety and therefore a important component of the ADA divemaster program.

The all-inclusive program includes all course instruction, including specialty courses, classroom materials, divemaster manual & registration, all dives necessary for qualification, a set of professional dive equipment, accommodation, airport transfers and weekly barbecues.

Night dive at the Rock Night dive at the Rock
The sunset over the bay was a real treat to watch through the boat as we waited for water to lift her. We would soon be on our way past the perfectly peeling lines of swell and out to the rocks.

My first opportunity to use the Seadoo Supercharged Seascooter was recently on a dive in the Tweed River, northern NSW. Visibility was quite good (15m) and water temperature was warm (24 degrees).
