Australia has an extremely diverse shark and ray fauna. There are more than 300 different species in the world and at least half of these are thought to only occur in our waters. With many different activities having an impact on these species, Australia is committed to developing the National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks.

This user-friendly guide was developed by CSIRO, Australian Fisheries Management Association, and Fisheries research & Development Corporation so that fishers, observers and scientists can identify the main Australian target and bycatch species of sharks, rays and chimaerids.

Each entry in the book is accompanied by a colour illustration, locality map, key identification features and notes on fishing, habitat and description.
