Whyalla - Cuttlefish Mating Mecca and More

A four-hour drive west of Adelaide, Whyalla is a seaside mining town is known as the place “where the outback meets the sea”. To divers, Whyalla is known as Australia’s Cuttlefish Mecca. Each winter thousands of Australian Giant Cuttlefish (Sepia apama) gather in the shallow waters around Whyalla to mate.

Named by Captain Cook in 1776, Julian Rocks in Byron Bay consists of ancient sedimentary rock, remains of a volcanic eruption more than 20 million years ago. It is an extension of Cape Byron separated by water and forms a most unique marine reserve, providing shelter and food for more than 500 tropical and temperate fish species alone!

A Turtle Nursery At Wakatobi

Sea Turtles can live to be 100 years old, but most don’t survive their first few days. In the wild, the tiny hatchlings typically encounter a gauntlet of predators as they hatch and make their way from beachside nests to open water, and they remain especially vulnerable those first few months of life. When nature is in balance, this attrition is a normal part of the circle of life. But when turtles become threatened by factors such as habitat loss, or predators like fish and birds, they may need a little extra help to maintain a normal population. This is where Wakatobi Dive Resort has stepped in.
